The Word of the Lord Stands Forever: a Devotional Bible Study for Families and Sunday Schools

Have you ever been told that the Bible is an ancient document that isn’t relevant for us today?

That is a common notion, especially in today’s morally relativistic world.

Q1) What does the Bible say about itself?
The Bible tells us that it is God’s word several hundred times (read article 1).  The Bible makes the statement “God said…” over THREE THOUSAND times (article 2)!  Here are two articles worth reading on that subject!

In addition to the text of the Bible itself, Jesus claimed that the Bible was true.

Q2) Other than the Bible itself, is there any other external evidence that support’s the authenticity of the Bible?
The Bible consists of 66 books written over a course of roughly 1500 years by approximately 40 different authors from a variety of different walks of life – and yet it has a continuity of message that is difficult to explain away.
The Bible repeatedly foretells events before they occurred with great specificity often generations after having been penned.
People whose lives are described in the Bible were often imperfect, immoral, barbaric, and evil.  Those people are looked up to as the Patriarchs of the Judeo-Christian faiths.  What religion concocted by the mind of man would render its heroes so… human?
The Dead Sea Scrolls, buried in the middle east during the first century AD were unearthed in the mid-1900’s.  Despite the assertion by many Biblical skeptics that the Bible has been modified drastically from the original, the text of these scrolls, which were buried for almost 2000 years, are nearly identical to the modern text.
There are nearly 30,000 New Testament manuscripts surviving from before the printing press.  These manuscripts have been found in churches, monasteries, libraries, and private collections around the world and have been catalogued, photographed and studies by textual scholars for generations.
Recently, researchers from the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts have digitally catalogued thousands of images from the pages of these manuscripts.  They have found that there is greater than 95% transcription accuracy between the oldest surviving texts (over 1500 years old) and the scriptures we call sacred today.  No other ancient document is so well preserved.
The historical references in the Bible have been demonstrated to be historically accurate even before architectural evidence caught up to the text.
Q3) Well just because there is a lot of evidence to support that the text itself is reliable when compared to the original, and it is historically verifiable, does that mean that I should trust it today?
Here is what the Bible says about itself:
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
Q4) So even if I accept the notion that the Bible is true and that it claims to be valuable for us today, what does that have to do with a flower anyway?
First of all, if the Bible is in fact true, then:
“In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth.”
If this is true, then all of the things that are created, were created by God (John 1:3).
In both the the Genesis and John accounts of the Creation event, God created everything, including the flower.  We also know that all things are created to praise him jubilantly (Psalm 96:11-12).
In fact, God has blessed us with a wide variety of flora throughout His creation. It is no wonder that parks, gardens and natural habitats are such popular places for people to visit when they want to relax and find peace.
Is it any wonder that Flowers always strive to point their petals at the warmth of the sun? Oh that we worked so hard  to point our hearts at the Son!
Whether we can hear it or not, we are surrounded by a massive choir; all singing God’s praise despite our silence!

Q5) If all of creation is constantly singing songs of Praise to God, why aren’t we?

That’s a pretty good question!

Alas. We do not follow Him in the constant and steadfast devotion of a simple flower. We’re better at finding excuses to wander than they are!

Instead of basking in His Warmth and Glory like the flowers, we consistently take short-term pleasure in sin, and as the result of our Sin, we have introduced death and dying into the fallen world:

“The Earth dries up and withers… defiled by its people, who have disobeyed.”

Isaiah 24:4-6

As the result of our fall, creation, which is created (like us) to Praise and Glorify the Creator, withers and fades. But it isn’t all doom and gloom!

Q6) I’m interested in praising God along with the flowers!  What can I do?

In his lovingkindness, God saw fit to give us a living and active testimony to His own greatness.  In addition, He has ordered history to make sure that we would have His inspired “God-breathed” word in order to learn about Him.

God’s Word Stands Forever! (Isaiah 49:8, Psalm 119:89).

And what does His Eternal Word say?

It tells us that in Him we have an advocate who pleas our case with His Father. He takes our well-deserved punishment and the punishment of the rest of His Creation on His own undeserving shoulders (1 John 2:1-2).

By Him, those of us who believe in Him will one day see a new Earth where

He has made all things new and where all things will no longer wither (Rev 21:1-5).
All we have to do is believe in Him and we will be made new!  For more about the New Creation that we can become simply by believing in Him read this!
